Introduction

Joel Ducorroy, one may qualify him as a neo-conceptual humourist, collects words and plays with art.

He found a gimmick: « style is the thing » andyou only haveto readto understand it. He adopted the name “plaquetitien artist” created by Jean-Claude Lange, a friend of Raymond Hains. In 1980, he met Serge Gainsbourg with whom he indulges a play on words: “Et caetera, c'est adequat” a sentence which roughly translate to “Et caetera, it's adequate”.

To commemorate this event, he wrote this sentence on license plates in the store in which Marcel Duchamp bought his bottle rack.

In 1981, he started using license plates, and created several works very similar to those of the Pop artists; plates representing a part of a whole object create the said objected when gathered. Since then, the work of Joël Ducorroy has been the subject of several exhibitions and particularly of:

In 1985, for the first time in New-York, at the Gallery Emily Harvey which mainly supports artists of Fluxus movement

In 1987, in New-York again, for a solo exhibition during which he met Andy Warhol;

In 1988, first exhibition at the Contemporary Art Gallery of Museum of Nice;

In 1989, he participated at the Colour of Monochrome exhibition of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo;

In 1991, nines galleries got together to celebrate the tenth anniversary of his work;

In the following years, like one of his mentors, Rodchenko, he applied his ideas in various fields such as architecture, cloth design and photography:

At the end of 1992, for the Confort Moderne in Poitiers, he created a massive work with license plates (over a thousand of plates were required) representing the inside of a 4-room apartment.

He organized a solo exhibition in 2003 at the FIAC with the baudoin lebon gallery which has represented him since 1994.
