Nicolas GUILBERT
Introduction
Nicolas Guilbert is a painter, draughtsman and photographer.
Born in 1958 in Paris, he paid tribute to Coco, a photograph by Robert Doisneau, in his first exhibition of drawings (1984), before publishing several books of drawings and exhibiting collages, drawings and "Photoiles" in several Parisian galleries during the 1990s and 2000s.
While his highly graphic pictorial work emphasises on the stroke and paper supports, his images blend reportage on the spot, sensitivity to the unusual and humour.
His photographic work was revealed by Animaux & Cie (Grasset, 2010), then Animonuments, a sentimental journey through France, exhibited at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature and at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2011.
In 2014, the Mougins Museum of Photography showed "Connivences", his photographic dialogue with Patrick Zachmann (Magnum), while in 2015 his best images on the theme of animality were exhibited at Flair Galerie (Arles).
Paris Paradis, un journal photographique (Flammarion, 2015), the fruit of thirty years of photography across the capital, is the best summary of his style, both classic and playful.
In early 2018, he was invited by the curator of the Palais-Royal to exhibit some sixty photographs from Paris Paradis in the middle of the estate.
Having undertaken for several years a new series of works entitled "IconoBox" including all his mediums and for the first time sculpture, these were the subject of an exhibition at La Folie Saint-Martin (Paris Xe), a private venue acquired by a couple of collectors, in May-June 2018.
At the end of 2021 "Voir & Regarder l'Art" (Hersher editions).
He gathers his work on the great museums, galleries, art fairs in 245 images made during 35 years from Naples to New York, from Rotterdam to Madrid, from Basel to Los Angeles, passing through Paris and the greatest Italian museums.
